I have been breeding Australian Stock Horses since 1967 when as a 15 year old teen, without assistance from my non-horsey parents, I bred my first foal from a borrowed polo mare. I must have done something right, as that bloodline is still successful in our stud.
As a result I became âaddictedâ to breeding horses, so wanting to find out more, I researched everything by snail mail, particularly horse genetics, pedigree evaluation and training, delving deep into encyclopedias and libraries, and listening to experts in their fields. I was curious about everything - the art, science and tools.
The Stud prefix is âChalaniâ which we pronounce Sh-lar-ny, like champagne. It is aboriginal for âplace of cockatoos.â
Together with my daughter Kim, the Chalani stud has enjoyed considerable success Australia-wide. I have taught adult Equine Studies for 19 years, and have written numerous articles for equine magazines. In 1999 I wrote the widely acclaimed Horse Colour Explained which sold in over 17 countries and had a Dutch translation.
I have judged horses at local shows, right through to Royals and Nationals and done workshops in almost every state of Australia.
In 2023 and 24, I wrote 2 more books, and started this blog.
