We always had freely available salt blocks, including a mineral element compounded for our particular grazing conditions. Are these now less used? I did find them from an old time feed supplier in Tassie where I live, but it was a bit of a search. The horses are working away on them occasionally after an initial big chew when it was first put out.
Hello Kay - sorry to take so long to reply but I am now back from New Zealand ready to write again. I had an unbelievable trip - no horses though.
Salt blocks and mineral blocks are still used and we get them through our fodder merchant. Agricultural suppliers also sell them.
However, I think the takeaway from this post is that they are very generic, and not balanced for one's own location and feed regime. Therefore, supplementary feeding with raw salt is optimal.
